Announcement: Disability & Development week

In the week between 3 December (International Day of People with Disabilities) and 10 December 2006 (Internationl Day of Human Rights) DCDD organises a 'Disability & Development' week with a series of events and trainings.

December 3 is the international day for disabled people and December 10 is the international human rights day. Between December 3 and 10 DCDD will organize a series of events that draw attention to the importance of human rights of disabled people worldwide. We will invite people from Dutch and international disabled people organizations (DPO’s), development co-operation organizations, human rights organizations and government. DPO representatives from Cambodia, Uganda, Kenya, South Africa and Nicaragua will contribute to the disability and development week. These five DPO’s (will further be called ‘Southern partners’) participate in a by DCDD coordinated international lobby venture and are partners of DCDD institutional members ICCO, Cordaid, VSO, Children’s Welfare Stamps, and Liliane Fund.

The preliminary programme of the D&D week

Monday December 4: 
Welcoming day for the Southern partners Welcoming of the representatives of the five Southern partners, getting acquainted, exploring the lobby venture and initial prioritizing of issues relevant for the different organizations. Closed meeting for Southern partners and organisations. Duration: 5-6 hours.

 

Tuesday December 5: 
Internal training for the Southern partners A training for the Southern partners on human rights conventions in general and the UN ‘disability’ convention in specific, exploring the contents of the UN ‘disability’ convention, discussing what are important issues in the respective countries and how the UN ‘disability’ convention might play a role in improving the situation. Closed meeting for Southern partners, organisation and contributors/trainers. Duration: 8 hours.

 

Wednesday December 6: 
International public conference ‘disability rights and development’ A big conference organised for a large group of people (around 100-150) from various backgrounds about disability rights in developing countries, in Dutch language. Speakers will be experts on human and disability rights and politicians. Goal is to mobilize social support and political recognition that disability is a human rights issue in word and deed. The conference starts at 11:00 hrs.

 

Thursday December 7: 
Training workshop on disability rights A national training workshop organised in co-operation with the Dutch National Disability Council, in which current national laws on disability (including the Dutch national law) are compared to the UN ‘disability’ convention. The training workshop will be set up around different case-studies and will focus on disability mainstreaming and development. Meeting for invitees only: from (Dutch) DPO’s, government, development co-operation organizations, human rights organisations and the Southern partners. Duration: afternoon.

 

Friday December 8: 
Concluding workshop for the Southern Partners Together with representatives of the partner Dutch development co-operation NGOs of the five Southern organisations a planning will be drafted for the years 2007-2010 of the DCDD lobby venture project. Closed meeting for Southern partners, organisations and partner DCDD institutional members. Duration: 6-8 hours.
