I teach and research social anthropology at the University of Amsterdam. I focus on the everyday needs of adults with intellectual disabilities in different cultures, and how these can be met through local networks of support. I have conducted long-term ethnographic research in the UK, in Italy, and over the past few years in India too – where I am still working on a longitudinal study of families in the state of Kerala. Over the past couple of years, I have been working to bridge the gap between this kind of disability research and the needs of people and organisations on the ground. I am excited by the opportunity to contribute to the international development sector through the work of DCDD, and in particular to link it more closely to research on disability and development in and from the Global South.
