Marleen Nelisse

Board Member

My career in the international disability sector began in Papua New Guinea, where I engaged in advocacy work to promote disability inclusion, collaborating with local stakeholders to advance the rights of individuals with disabilities. Subsequently, as Programme Director with The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ, an organisation focusing on strengthening eye care services in the Pacific region, I facilitated partnerships with governments and healthcare entities to enhance local capacity and disease prevention efforts. My prior board experience in Papua New Guinea sparked my interest in governance, aligning well with my commitment to inclusive development. Leveraging my extensive network and international experience, I am prepared to contribute effectively as a board member at DCDD, dedicated to advancing equal rights and opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Currently, I am working as Programme Director with Safisana, a pioneering social enterprise that designs, builds, and operates recycling plants in low- and middle-income countries, converting faecal and organic waste into high-value products, renewable energy (biogas, electricity), and organic fertiliser. This dual experience provides valuable insights into bridging the commercial and NGO sectors to achieve sustainable development goals.
